Sustainability

We take Sustainability seriously!

Fully off grid, complete with composting toilet, solar power, gas gooking , water heating and diesel heating we take sustainability seriously!

From recycled bath, shower body, doors and windows, and gumboot plant holders, Gumboot Paradise prides itself on our creativity and Kiwi ingenuity. We use of locally available renewable resources where ever possible such as driftwood from our local beach and the abundant introduced gum and blackwood trees for the outdoor fire and bushbath.

Driftwood also figures prominantly for a variety of features from the decorative drfitwood face to the handrail for the steps, mezzanine ladder, drfitwood drying rack and gate.

  • Composting Toilet

Handmade by yours truely this design is version 2.0 with further improvements to come such as lowering the height a tad. The large black bucket is emptied after every guest into a plastic 44 gallon drum for composting for until it is ready to be placed on our decorative gardens

  • Bush Bath

The recycled bath from my Dad’s farm is heated using renewable firewood sourced from my 3 hectare property. The windows around the bath enclosure are recycled from an old work colleagues house in Greymouth. The timber from the deck was salvaged from local bridge safety fences.

  • Shower

The plastic walls and based of the shower unit were sourced from a local farmers market in Oxford by my Dad. The shower is heated using a gas califont with water sourced for a creek up the hill. The shower drains into a large soak pit under the lawn. Eco friendly liquid soap is supplied in the shower and Ecofriendly cleaning products are used as much as possible. The structural timber for the shower was recycled and came with me from Dunedin.

  • Solar Power

Gumboot Paradise is fully Off grid. The Hut has 4× 395 watt solar panels on the roof, has a 2000w inverter plus a solar controller. This supplies power for lighting, charging of phones/ laptops e.t.c as well as power for the washing machine. A dryer is also sometimes used but usually washing is dryed outside. The Gumboot Paradise sign is also powered by a small solar panel.
